1889 was a year marked by steel, steam, and locomotives. It was also the year Hamilton Carhartt & Company was formed by its namesake (affectionately known as “Ham”), who began producing overalls in a small Detroit loft with two sewing machines and a half-horsepower electric motor. Hamilton’s early failures motivated him to conduct extensive market research, and after speaking with railway workers personally, he devised a product that actually met their needs. The Carhartt bib overall was created with the motto “Honest value for an honest dollar” and quickly evolved into the industry standard for excellent workwear.
Carhartt expanded to encompass mills in South Carolina and Georgia, as well as sewing facilities in Atlanta, Detroit, Dallas, and San Francisco, by 1910.
